Edith Landmann

Edith Landmann was an independent scholar and became affiliated with Stefan George through Robert Boehringer. Her academic life included writing “several commendable works on epistemology and aesthetics” (Norton 516) and keeping George’s legacy alive after his death. During her lifetime, Edith and her husband spent much time with George.

Georg Peter Landmann was the son of Edith and Julius Landmann. Because George was so close to Edith and Julius (and often spent extended vacations with them), the young boy likely grew up around George. The Landmann family had a special cabinet for George’s first editions (Norton 716) and the young Georg Peter wrote out one of George’s poems into a homemade scroll. Because of the affinity for George that permeated his years of growing up, Georg Peter later wrote many literary pieces about his family’s favorite poet.

They would spend summers together and Edith sometimes took care of George when he was sick (Norton 639). There was a sense of comfort that George found in the Landmanns—the family they had built with children in calm settings—and Edith often recorded the conversations she had with her revered poet friend. Notably, she was one of George’s many Jewish followers.
