Blätter für die Kunst (Pages for Art or Leaves for Art) was the literary journal in which Stefan George and the members of his circle published their poetry and other literary endeavors. Much of their writing advocated for a culturally and intellectually elite Germany that posited George as somewhat of a mental and spiritual master. The literary pursuits that George published individually were often first seen in the Blätter and he devoted much time to crafting this journal as a means to further his image as a leader of intellectual and deified fervor. Robert Norton states in his book Secret Germany that the Blätter "was to become for a time the most visible, and the most successful, instrument of [George's] relentless will to exert power over people and things, to set his stamp on the world" (Norton 129). George, concerned with rejecting the German naturalism that defined the literary works of his contemporaries, was very selective in who he chose to contribute to the journal. His discernment in who could participate was deliberate and arduous. Accompanying the mystical themes in which the writers wrote about, along with their dream for a better, more conceptual/ abstract Germany, the writers of the Blätter formed a community in which George became a master, a deified being. "In time, to be connected with the [journal] was to involve far more than being a contributor...it meant that one subscribed to an entire system of belief, to a set of specific values, and above all that one recognized George as a spiritual, and not just poetic, mentor and guide" (Norton 129).
