Karl Wolfskehl

Karl Wolfskehl was a Jewish man who was one of the early members of George's Circle. The friendship that Wolfskehl had with George was the longest relationship that George had within his life. According to Norton, it was one of the most meaningful that George had: "Spanning four decades, the relationship to Wolfskehl was nearly unbroken if not entirely unmarred, during that entire time, so that not only the longevity but also the continuity of the friendship remained unparalleled by any other of George's attachments" (137). The longevity of their friendship, in many ways, can be attributed to Wolfskehl's sincere and profound devotion. His loyalty never faltered. Norton states in his George biography that "No small part of this extraordinary [friendship] endurance is attributable to the degree of devotion Wolfskehl brought to George, a dedication one can only call fanatical: not just unquestioning but irrational, ferocious, and unwavering" (137).
